Learning assessment is a topic that still causes doubts, especially when it is necessary to assess a deaf student. Thinking about this aspect, our research had as main objective: to investigate the evaluative practices of Portuguese language teachers who work with deaf students at the Federal Institute of Piauí. The research was of a qualitative nature and had the semi-structured interview as a data collection instrument. The results indicate that teachers understand the need for an assessment of learning appropriate to the linguistic needs of deaf students, but they do not know how to build this instrument; deaf students experience difficulties when assessing learning and educational interpreters do not understand their real role. Based on these results, we have constructed an orientation manual on assessment of learning in the Portuguese language discipline, which aims to assist teachers in that curriculum component.
